II failed. I thought I could do it.

I felt like my life of classroom failures had just led me to this point. The letters jumbled together like ancient hieroglyphics, and even though I knew them, they were always so unreadable.

Maybe I couldn’t do it. Maybe it was just too hard.

Sitting at that tiny desk, I felt the room closing in around me. With another all-too-familiar test packet in front of me, I tapped my pencil on my desk as the teacher routinely gave the instructions like a flight attendant before takeoff.

I didn’t even know the difference between an SAT and an ACT, but here I sat ready to fill in some more bubbles. The auditorium was packed like sardines with kids from all over the Bay Area.

All of them hopeful, just like me, that we had studied enough, prepared enough, practiced enough. Our futures hung in the balance.
